Mid-Year Update

It is hard to believe that half of the school year is already over.  Time has moved very quickly.  The second half of the year will be very busy!

7th grade social studies classes have been learning about Westward Expansion.  They have been studying about the hardships of the travelers of the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails.  Students completed a group activity where they had to research and plan as if they were one of the daring wagon trains headed for a new life in the west.  They were amazed by the amount of time, energy, courage and money it took to embark on such an adventure. Soon they will be studying how the Lone Star Republic came into existence and eventually became a state.

8th grade classes recently finished the Roaring 20's and made the shift to the terrible economic times of the Great Depression.  Students have been studying the various programs implemented by the United States government during the New Deal.  The journey will lead them into how the Depression in the U.S. help assist the world into a global tailspin.  Governments around the world lay on the brink of disaster and evil dictators will take hold in Europe and Asia.

February 10, 2016... Mark the date!  8th grade students will participating in their very first History Fair.  The fair will take place on the morning of February 10 at Ridgewood High School.  Projects will be judged on a variety of categories.  There will be an evening exhibit open to the public from 5-6:30 pm.  Come by and check out all the cool projects that students from Leigh, Giles, Union Ridge and RHS have on display.  Admission is FREE!  Hope to see you there!

January 2016

Happy New Year to all!  It is going to be a busy 2016.  7th grade classes have finished all their Constitution requirements and are now focusing on American society in the early 1800's. They will be learning how the nation grew physically, politically and socially in the 19th century.

8th grade has a big event on the way.  Along with the normal social studies curriculum, they have been conducting research in preparation to our first History Fair.  They will be competing on February 10 at Ridgewood High School against students from Giles and Union Ridge.  There will be an evening event open to the public.  More information will be sent home to 8th grade parents soon.  It is shaping up to be an exciting event!
